Reflection

G. Kosey Griffith

In this class I learned about the meaning of a text. A text is something that can deliver a message, and this does not have to be so literal it does not need to be a book quote, or a text messages an image can deliver a message with somebody and food can also be a text that delivers messages to others. A genre is also a very important part in what we learned in ENC 2135. A genre helps specify a text while also categorizing a text at the same time. I learned to use these tools of categorizing at broader and more specific levels. I learned the different ways we convince the audience that something is a text through activities such as presenting podcasts. I had the privilege to be able to understand subject matter in my writing through new terms like text and genre which has already helped me to better understand what I am writing about in my papers.

I learned the meaning of a text and genre through the podcasts that students in the class would present. That display texts and explain why and how it is delivering a message that can categorize a text. When I was researching what I was going to present for my own podcast through research I received a greater understanding of what a text could be and how I could explain things as a text properly. To go a little further in explanation when presenting a podcast students could have classified what they were sharing in the podcast in to a more specific unique genre. An example would be if a podcast was about college football players and the lack of money it makes for players leading to homelessness for some college football players that would be its most specific genre while a broadened one could just be known as college sports. Mat Wenzel would sometimes ask us questions afterwards to really make sure we understand how the podcasts we would present are texts and why they are genres. Along with the podcasts we had to regularly present journals that would keep students who missed class up to date about what we had learned the day prior. However, creating the podcast and identifying a text would help us in the future with incoming projects such as our Personal Narrative, Inquiry Project, and Project Three.

Besides dissecting daily texts and genres, in Mat Wenzel’s class I would also use the Bedford book of genres, podcasts, conferences and meetings with my instructor, and examples of other pieces I would analyze to prepare for our three big papers. I learned through Roxanne Gays piece, “I Once was Miss America” how to properly share inner dialogue in a piece and the details of my environment at the same time. I noticed the easy to follow style of Roxanne Gays, “I Once Was Miss America.” I could follow her emotions and settings which was something I wanted to mimic in my Personal Narrative. My conferences also aided in my ability to properly balance the amount of thoughts and details I put into my stories so others could follow and understand it easily. Sometimes I would have trouble portioning and focusing either too much on details about my environment or focusing too much about on my inner dialogue which inevitably would leave my readers confused so conferences and clarification helped me construct a more cohesive paper.

When I began the Inquiry Project, I wanted to do it on a community I had joined prior to starting Summer C. It was the social justice Living Learning Community I was doing research on. I was a little lost about what my text could be and how I could go into vast detail about them. I was continuing to learn about texts in class that would help me learn about some of the platforms that my Living Learning Community uses to deliver messages to the studies within the group. I struggled at some points in the Project to give reasonable explanations of texts my organization used but worked hard to revise and correct mistakes made in this Project. Since there wasn’t much, I could dive into in my social justice Living Learning Community Mat gave me the opportunity to study a separate text such as a meme and present it to him to get some points back in a meeting. From these processes of meeting with Mat I learned that sometimes when I don’t understand I may need to ask for help from resources around me to check the accuracy of my work. I also learned to find a balance between answering the questions of my project accurately and doing fully what the question is asking while presenting an understandable piece with a balance between my thoughts and what is actually happening.

In my project three I created a twitter page with memes I created representing my different genres and I inserted a link for my podcast I did with my friend Vicky. We discussed the different type of text used within the social justice Living Learning Community to communicate a message between one another. With this assignment and project, I was able to learn how to script a podcast set certain guidelines to make a smooth and easily understandable podcast.
